Going Over SmackDown: Results, Reactions & Full Recap (03/07/19)

July 3, 2019

This weeks episode of WWE SmackDown Live came from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Tom Phillips recapped Braun Strowman and Bobby Lashley flying through the stage on Monday Night Raw. Kevin Owens then welcomed Drew McIntyre and Shane McMahon to the Kevin Owens Show. Owens called out McMahon for being afraid of the Undertaker. Dolph Ziggler came down to the ring and they argued over who deserves another WWE title shot. McMahon made them a tag team and announced a match against Heavy Machinery, with the winners being inserted into the Smackdown Tag Team title match against The New Day and The Planet’s Tag Team at Extreme Rules. Well that was certainly a segment that happened, Shane did nothing of note and now we have two random tag team partners that don’t get along. Also, I guess Owens is a babyface this week?

Daniel Bryan defeated Big E. Bryan defeated Big E with the running knee after Rowan attacked him on the outside. This was good, they worked well together and the heels get some revenge following some recent losses to New Day.

R-Truth cut a promo about wanting to win the 24/7 title back from Drake Maverick.

Nikki Cross challenged Bayley to a match during a Moment of Bliss. Nikki is hosting and Bayley is her guest. Nikki is gloriously awkward here as she makes sure to tell Bliss she loves her. She’s from Glasgow, and has a bit of an accent, so she will speak slowly. Nikki then brings out Bayley. Nikki thanks her for joining the show and is impressed that Alexa is allowing to shine tonight. Bayley says she shouldn’t do Alexa’s bidding, which Nikki denies. Nikki asks why Bayley called Alexa a liar and she says because she is. Nikki refuses this, while Bayley says it’s unfair that Nikki wins all the matches, but doesn’t get the title shot. Bayley asks why she’s facing Alexa instead of Nikki. Nikki says she doesn’t know, but wants a match right now. Bayley accepts.

Bayley defeated Nikki Cross. Bayley pinned Cross after hitting the Bayley-to-Belly. This was solid for the time given, but will be more interested in the follow up with the Nikki/Alexa dynamic, and am not a fan of giving Bayley her win back right away.

Kofi Kingston and Samoa Joe had a war of words in the ring that ended with a middle finger from Kingston and him hitting Trouble in Paradise on Joe. This was a really good segment, with Kofi showing great fire and Joe continuing to be one of the best if not the best promos in the company.

Andrade defeated Apollo Crews. After Zelina Vega landed a hurricanrana on Crews on the outside, Andrade hit the hammerlock DDT and got the pinfall. This was a solid back and forth match with the right guy winning.

Apparently there was no one at Aleister Black’s door last week. Black then challenged whoever it was to a fight at Extreme Rules. Hmm... Who could it be?

Ember Moon defeated Mandy Rose. Moon connected on the Eclipse for the pinfall. Moon gets some revenge as this feud will likely continue.

Shelton Benjamin was asked backstage who would win the WWE title at Extreme Rules. He looked around and smiled before walking off camera.

Heavy Machinery defeated Kevin Owens and Dolph Ziggler to earn a spot in the triple-threat Smackdown Tag Team title match at Extreme Rules. Heavy Machinery pinned Owens after he got super kicked by Ziggler and after they dropped him with the Compactor. After the match, Ziggler picked up Owens, who responded with laying Ziggler out with a stunner. Following the horribly contrived commercial break, they made the most of their time and had a solid outing, with the expected and correct result. I just wish they’d do something of use with Owens.

I think Raw actually was the better show this week, and SmackDown could easily be better if they had people on the show like Finn Balor, Shinsuke Nakamura, Rusev, and I'm sure there are plenty more. This was a solid episode, with the highlights being the Joe/Kofi segment and the Bryan/Big E match, but there was also a lot of crap here. The biggest complaint is that they spent too much time on the Lashley vs. Braun angle with all these video recaps and highlights taking up so much time. I was also hoping for a Shane free episode, but nope, boy was I wrong.
