Going Over Smackdown: Results & Analysis (09/10/18)

October 10, 2018

This weeks episode of WWE Smackdown Live comes from the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Smackdown Women’s championship match: Becky Lynch (c) vs. Charlotte ended in a double countout. Charlotte and Becky Lynch brawled on the outside and couldn’t make it into the ring by the referee’s count of 10. Charlotte speared Lynch through the entrance as both were making their way to the back. This was an overall very good and heated match, playing off of their previous meetings well, and while the finish was a bit flat, the post match was really good and likely sets up a big stipulation match for Evolution.

The hype the 1000th episode of Smackdown next week with the return of The Undertaker.

WWE World Cup Tournament Qualifying Match: Jeff Hardy defeated Samoa Joe via referee stoppage. Hardy attacked Joe’s knee and the referee called for the bell when Joe couldn’t make it to his feet. This was a solid match, and I loved the finish. It came off flat as WWE rarely uses ref stoppages, but this one played off of the established injury well and made it mean something. It also made Jeff look smart, while protecting Joe from a pin or submission loss.

WWE hyped Evolution’s return at Smackdown 1000 next week.

Paige announced Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch in a Last Woman Standing match at WWE Evolution.

The Miz tried to turn Daniel Bryan and AJ Styles against each other to no avail. Miz then said he’ll fight the winner of their Crown Jewel title match. This was really good stuff, a mix of playfulness and seriousness from Bryan and Styles, with Miz stirring the pot and bringing the fire at the end big time.

AJ Styles defeated Shelton Benjamin via pinfall. Styles connected on the Phenomenal Forearm for the win. This was a pretty good match, with Styles winning clean, but Shelton getting some TV time to remind people that he’s a damn fine wrestler when given a chance.

Aiden English gave the Director’s Cut of “One Night in Milwaukee,” showing just a bit more of the video from last week. English called out Rusev and said he’ll destroy the video if Rusev reunites Rusev Day. Lana said English had been hacked, and she demanded the rest of the video be played, showing him coming onto Lana and her stopping his advances. English said the offer still stands and when Lana gets tired of Rusev Day, come get some Aiden Night. English escaped Rusev’s attempted attack. Well, that was certainly an angle. The faces outsmarted the heel already and we move on; it was an angle.

WWE hyped Rey Mysterio’s return for next week at Smackdown 1000 before promoting his World Cup Tournament Qualifying match against Shinsuke Nakamura.

WWE World Cup Tournament Qualifying Match: Randy Orton defeated Big Show via pinfall. Orton hit the RKO on Big Show for the victory. This was an ok match, but really flat way to close the show. Orton winning made sense considering his recent push.

John Cena, Kurt Angle, Jeff Hardy and Randy Orton have all qualified for the WWE World Cup at Crown Jewel.

End of show.
