Going Over Smackdown: Results & Analysis (19/09/18)

WWE Smackdown Live Results:

Smackdown opened with a recap of Becky Lynch winning the Smackdown Women’s title at Hell in a Cell, promoting her championship coronation.

The Miz and Maryse taunted Daniel Bryan during a MizTV segment. Bryan hit the ring and attacked Miz, who accidentally knocked down Maryse. Maryse laughed it off as a set up, and when Miz attempted to attack Bryan, he knocked Maryse off the ring apron. This was a pretty good opening segment, as Miz & Maryse were great assholes, but I felt that they tried to get a bit too cute at the end, and continuing the build to Super Show-Down.

Cesaro defeated Kofi Kingston. Cesaro hit the Neutralizer for the pinfall.

Rusev and Aiden English argued backstage about their tag team title loss at Hell in a Cell. English complained to a staffer about Lana and said Rusev Day was his idea. Lana overheard him and threatened to tell Rusev. Before she could, Rusev asked English to announce him for his U.S. title match against Shinsuke Nakamura.

U.S. Title Match: Shinsuke Nakamura (c) defeated Rusev. Rusev reversed the Kinshasa with the Machka Kick. As he stood up, Aiden English hopped onto the apron and yelled Rusev Crush, allowing Nakamura to get the rollup for the pinfall. After the match, English attacked Rusev with the microphone and sang Happy Rusev Day before leaving the ring. This was also a pretty good match, but felt as if it was missing something. The finish felt a bit flat, but also worked well for the turn. I’ll be curious to see how much of chance they give English on his own.

AJ Styles defeated Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas. Styles flipped backwards out of a rollup attempt into the Styles Clash for the pinfall. After the match, Samoa Joe attacked Styles, but the champ got the best of Joe, sending him retreating through the crowd. This was a very good, bordering on great match with Almas getting in a lot before finally falling to the WWE Champion. The post match attack also played well.

Asuka defeated Billie Kay. Asuka choked out Billie Kay for the submission victory.

Paige brought out Becky Lynch to celebrate her title win at Hell in a Cell. Charlotte announced she is challenging Lynch for the Smackdown Women’s championship at Super Show Down. Charlotte attacked Lynch, but Lynch turned the tables and threw her into the stairs. She locked in the DisArmHer in the middle of the ring before taking her title and posing on the entrance ramp. This was a pretty good segment to close the show, they are determined to make Becky the heel here, and her stuff was good, but the fans aren’t buying it and still want to support her. It doesn’t help that Charlotte doesn’t come off as a sympathetic babyface in any way.

End of show.
