Going Over Smackdown: Results & Analysis (12/09/18)

September 12, 2018

WWE Smackdown Live Results:

Smackdown opened with a tribute to those we lost on 9/11.

Jeff Hardy defeated Shinsuke Nakamura. Hardy hit the Twist of Fate on Nakamura and climbed to the top rope for the Swanton Bomb. Randy Orton knocked him off the rope, causing the disqualification. Orton attacked him with a chair before Hardy turned the tide, hitting him with the chair and connecting on the Swanton Bomb. This was a solid, but flat and at times very repetitive match with the expected non-finish.

Maryse and Miz cut a promo on Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella.

AJ Styles talked about what he’s going to do to Samoa Joe at Hell in a Cell in an empty arena before Smackdown. This was pretty good, and I appreciated the different setting for the promo.

Charlotte defeated Sonya Deville. Charlotte tapped out Deville with the Figure Eight. After the match, Becky Lynch in disguise attacked Charlotte. This was a solid back and forth match with Deville getting in a lot before losing; the post match was also good. Charlotte celebrates with the fans until she gets attacked by Becky in disguise. Becky beats her down and locks on the disarmher.

Samoa Joe cut a promo on AJ Styles, reading story time ahead of their WWE title match at Hell in a Cell.

No. 1 contender’s match for the Smackdown Tag Team titles: Rusev Day defeated The Bar. Aiden English took the Brogue Kick, allowing Rusev to hit the Machka Kick for the pinfall victory. Rusev Day will face the New Day at Hell in a Cell for the tag team titles. This was a good back and forth tag match with the right team winning. I also love English continuing to prove himself to Rusev, even sacrificing himself to do so.

Andrade Cien Almas defeated R-Truth. Almas rolled up R-Truth after he was distracted by Carmella attacking Zelina Vega. This was solid and fun while it lasted, plus Almas needed a win. I’m all in on this Truth & Carmella pairing.

Asuka and Naomi made fun of the IIconics backstage.

Brie Bella defeated Maryse. Bella locked in the Yes Lock, and Miz pulled her out of the ring off of Maryse to cause the disqualification. What an absolutely enthralling and exciting main event to sell a PPV… Thankfully the post match was pretty good. Bryan attacked Miz, who threw him out of the ring into Bella. After a wild brawl, Bella closed the show by punching Miz in the face.

End of show.
