Going Over Smackdown: Results & Analysis (05/09/18)

WWE Smackdown Live Results:

Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella opened Smackdown Live with a recap of last week’s beatdown. The Miz and Maryse filmed a callout to Bryan and Bella in an empty arena before Smackdown. Andrade “Cien” Almas and Zelina Vega interrupted Bryan and Bella, leading to a rematch from last week. This was fine, as it played off of last week’s angle and continues the build to the HIAC match, but please stop having Almas talk when that’s the exact reason Vega is with him.

Daniel Bryan defeated Andrade “Cien” Almas. Bryan pinned Almas after hitting the running knee. Bella attacked Vega after the match. Miz and Maryse got on the Jumbotron after the match and said Bryan and Bella would have to wait until Hell in a Cell to fight. This was very good stuff, they work extremely well together. It sucks that Almas is such an afterthought on the main roster, but he continues to work hard and deliver.

Charlotte and Becky Lynch were interviewed from separate locations. This was a pretty good overall interview segment to hype the match, coming off way better than most WWE women’s promos, but at the same time it felt a bit rushed in its cadence.

Naomi defeated Peyton Royce. Billie Kay attacked Naomi after the bell and Asuka made the save after returning to television. Well, Naomi finally got some revenge and found a friend; it was solid.

Samoa Joe says his threat of showing up at AJ Styles’ house kept the champ at home. Styles ran out and attacked Joe, sending him retreating up the entrance ramp.

Rusev Day defeated SaniTY and The Usos for a chance to face the New Day at Hell in a Cell. Rusev hit Eric Young with the Machka Kick for the pinfall. After the match, the Bar squared off with Rusev Day ahead of next week’s No. 1 contender’s match. This was a good and fun tag match that never slowed and on top of that, gave us a happy Rusev day.

R-Truth defeated The Miz. The Miz set up for the Skull Crushing Finale, but Daniel Bryan’s music played. R-Truth rolled up Miz for the pinfall victory. After the match, Bryan and Brie Bella attacked Miz and Maryse. Andrade Cien Almas and Zelina Vega made the save, allowing Miz and Maryse to escape. Bella and Bryan reversed Almas and Vega’s attack, locking in dual YES locks. Miz started to make the save, but thought twice and escaped back up the ramp. This was a perfectly solid match, which was here to set up Truth & Carmella for MMC and to set up the post match angle and further build to the mixed tag at HIAC.

End of show.
