Going Over Smackdown: Results & Analysis (29/08/18)

August 29, 2018

WWE Smackdown Live Results:

New Day opened the show celebrating their fifth tag team title reign. King Booker hit the ring and welcomes them to the five-time championship club before each of them try to do the Spin-a-Roonie. The New Day joined commentary for the following first of two triple-threat tag team match to name the No. 1 contender for the Smackdown Tag Team Title match at Hell in a Cell.

Cesaro and Sheamus defeated The Club and The Colons. Cesaro got the blind tag as the Colons hit Luke Gallows with a double backstabber. Cesaro and Sheamus cleared the ring and took the pinfall victory. They then tossed the pancakes from the announce table and mocked the New Day. It started slow, but picked up and worked into a pretty good match overall.

Paige announced Rusev and Aiden English would compete in next week’s triple-threat tag team match against the Usos and SaniTY. The winner of that match will face off against The Bar for the chance to wrestle the New Day at Hell in a Cell for the tag titles.

A recap video of last week’s brawl between Charlotte and Becky Lynch played. Charlotte vs. Carmella was announced in a rematch for the Smackdown Women’s Championship was announced for later in the night.

Jeff Hardy hit the ring with face paint that spelled out RKO on his cheek. He said Orton was in his head, and they replayed the video from last week with Hardy Swanton Bombing Orton through a table. Orton came out and said to refer to him as R-K, and Hardy cut him off by yelling “NO,” before saying he’d face him in the Hell in a Cell at this year’s event. This was a solid segment to set up another match for the HIAC PPV.

Billie Kay defeated Naomi. Peyton Royce kicked Naomi in the face while the ref was distracted, leading to a rollup victory by Kay.

Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella called The Miz a coward. Brie said it felt good to punch The Miz when Andrade Cien Almas and Zelina Vega interrupted them. That led to Almas vs. Bryan.

Daniel Bryan defeated Andrade Cien Almas. Bryan had Almas in the Yes Lock when Maryse came down to the ring and attacked Brie. Bryan let go and went to check on her when Miz attacked Bryan, causing the disqualification. Almas hit the Hammerlock DDT, then Miz held Bryan in the crossface while Vega and Maryse attacked Brie. Miz then then hit the Skull Crushing Finale on Bryan. This was a good match, and while short, it showed that they have a potentially great match in them. The finish protects Almas, and also continued the Miz vs. Bryan feud as well as the HIAC mixed tag. Overall, this was a well done segment.

AJ Styles recapped Samoa Joe’s attack from last week. Joe got on the phone with AJ’s wife and said maybe he’d stop by next week for the back-to-school BBQ next week. Styles exited the ring and headed to the back to look for Joe to no avail.

Smackdown Women’s Championship: Charlotte (c) defeated Carmella. Charlotte hit Natural Selection, then rolled into the Figure Eight, forcing Carmella to tap out. Becky Lynch hit the ring and attacked Charlotte from behind after the match. Becky grabbed the mic and said at Hell in a Cell, she’s taking her title back. This was an overall pretty good main event, with Carmella working really hard like at Summerslam, and delivering well. Unfortunately, this felt like most Charlotte TV matches, very deliberate, lacking drama, and while not bad, lacking something to make me care.

End of show.
